Are You Afraid of the Dentist?
Are you afraid of visiting the dentist? Many people are, especially small children. Think back to your first dental appointment. It is probably an event that you are never going to be able to forget. Kids are typically nervous about receiving any kind of dental care, which is not only understandable but also natural, as fear of the unknown begins early in life.
Kids typically think of dentists, or any other physician skilled at poking and prodding, to be some sort of evil doctors. Children have wild imaginations and will often make up fantastic stories that seem very real to them. So, overactive imaginations naturally lead to the unnecessary fear of dental care. Imagining what an evil dentist will do to them with their evil instruments as they sit helpless in the dentist’s chair is enough to make some children force their parents to yank them to their appointments, kicking and screaming all the way.
If you are particularly astute, you have no doubt noticed the look on a child’s face as they sit frozen in a dentist’s waiting room; it is definitely one of sheer terror. Smelling dental smells and hearing dental noises is all it takes to set off their inner panic button. Fortunately, more and more dentists realize this and are taking steps to combat the fear they strike in the hearts of little children.
Some of these steps include situating their examining rooms far away from the dental specialist waiting room, so drilling noises cannot be heard and teeth cleaning solutions cannot be smelled prior to the children’s examinations. Children are also being provided with activities to keep them occupied while they wait, such as coloring books or other busy-bee toys. Usually, a dentist will give a child a little gift as they depart as incentive to return for another visit. However, some children never move past seeing a dentist as someone who is out to get them.
Sometimes, a fear of the dentist follows a child into adulthood. This is why it is essential to visit an experienced and affordable dentist who understands this if you need any type of dental care at all. Of course a fear of going to the dentist won’t be there if you want to get additional services like the best teeth whitening technology.
A competent dentist knows why you’re fearful and reacts by treating you gently. They understand you need to be treated with kid gloves, and they are skilled at putting you at ease. They will also make sure their staff is trained to keep you comfortable at all times. You may still have understandable apprehension, but not as much as you would if you were being treated by a novice dentist.
As already stated, it is perfectly understandable why lots of folks would rather do anything other than visiting a dentist. However, it is an unavoidable necessity if you want to keep your teeth present and healthy throughout your lifetime. An experienced dentist can make this process easier and less stressful for you. Fear not: taking the time to find a quality dentist in your area will be well worth the time spent doing it.
